The importance of ventilation in the fight against COVID-19
In a poorly ventilated indoor environment, it is less likely that plumes of contaminated air will be dispersed quickly away from occupants in the same way they would outdoors. When we are outside we are less at risk because the air outside dilutes the plumes of pathogens - this is why it is vital to dilute any respiratory virus, including the Covid-19 virus in indoor air.
A growing body of evidence supports this such as this report from Rehva which explains clearly how Covid-19 is an airborne pathogen and that diluting the pathogen inside buildings reduces risks.
BBC News, Covid-19: Five ways to avoid catching the virus indoors:

For months we've been told to wash our hands and maintain social distancing to beat coronavirus.
But scientists and engineers say we also need to think about the air we breathe, as children go back to school and more people return to offices.
Good ventilation matters in five ways.
